With all of the deals flooding in from free agency and Tavares jumping to Toronto, we give our opinions on all of the major moves. Daniel and Taylor debate the merits of controversial moves from the Dallas Stars after missing out on Tavares. We discuss Stastny spurning Winnepeg for the Vegas Golden Knights, the ridiculous contracts, the goalie carousel, and Dylan, of course, goes over the Red Wings minor moves. At the end, we fail to predict the future! Yeah the O’Reilly trade happened right when we finished recording.
Vegas continues to thrive on our doubts, and the Texas Stars recent success begs the question if farm team success even matters. In this episode, we marvel at Fleury’s stealing of a series and the possibility that the Jets were worn out from their seven game slugfest with the Predators. We then transition to talk about the Texas Stars also having an amazing goaltender in Mike McKenna and their strong chance of winning the Calder Cup. Both the Texas Stars and the Red Wings’ Grand Rapids Griffins have won Calder Cups recently. We wonder why this hasn’t translated to success at the NHL level.
The Stars have found their new head coach, and his name is Jim! Monty looks to bring a fast-paced aggressive system and be a coach that the players trust. Before we get into all of this on the episode, we discuss the historic ending of the Capitals meme of never reaching past the second round. We discuss the dominance of the Tampa Bay Lightning and our excitement to see Brad Marchand and his licking of players gone from the playoffs. We discuss the insane game 7 coming up between the Preds and Jets Thursday night. And of course we discuss the underdog or underdogs, the Vegas Golden Nights and their historic run to the conference finals. Finally, we preview some exciting things that we will be covering in the summer, whether that be the draft coverage or advanced statistics Dylan did on the stars and red wings’ season.
In this episode, we talk all things playoffs, draft lottery, and our hope to be at the NHL draft in Dallas this June! It’s just Taylor and Dylan this episode, but we somehow make it through 30 mins without getting too side-tracked. Ok, we may go into one short rant about Ciarelli…it’s so difficult not too! In addition, we talk about our playoff predictions, Marchand’s bizarre licking of people, and a brief preview of who the Red Wings and Stars might draft.
It’s eulogy nation on this week’s Skate in the Crease.
This week we discuss the lost hopes and dreams of many a fan as we eulogize the hockey teams eliminated from the playoff race. We say goodbye to the hapless Buffalo Sabres. We say goodbye to the aging Sedin Twins and the Vancouver Canucks. We say goodbye to the tragic fall of the Ottawa Senators and the cost-cutting Eugene Melnyk. We say goodbye to the once assumed playoff team of the Detroit Red Wings and cry. We say goodbye to the previously Subban and pre-injured Price led Montreal Canadiens. We say goodbye, quite happily, to the bandwagon that is the Chicago Blackhawks. We say goodbye to the Chiarelli insanity show that is the Edmonton Oilers. Despite all of the farewells, we offer up some hope for each of these teams.
We end the episode by going over the playoff race and giving our hot takes on the future success of Colorado and the fate of the Calgary Flames.
The Seattle Expansion had an unbelievable ticket drive but fans will have high expectations after Vegas’ insane success. We’re not sure a second expansion can match the Vegas hype.
Our Playoff Hopes and Trade Outcome Analysis
We start this episode off by taking stock of the current playoff hopes of the teams around the NHL.
We look at the very early outcomes of the players moved at the trade deadline with some players thriving with their new hockey teams and others struggling to live up to the hopes of their new teams had when acquiring them.
What’s the NHL’s deal with International Hockey?
We’re still celebrating the USA Women’s Hockey Olympic Gold Medal Victory in a shootout thriller over Canada.
We go over the Olympic Athletes from Russia Men’s unsurprising gold medal amid the controversy of the NHL’s refusal to go to the Olympics and discuss the future of the NHL in the Olympics.
In Memoriam: Arizona Coyotes (10/5/17 – 3/6/18)
Then in our deep dive, we start off our eulogy series with the Arizona Coyotes, a team with big changes and a lot of hope coming into the hockey season only to be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
We end the show as always with Loose Ends and Hot Takes, where we have interesting conversations about soup throwing, yes you read that right, as well as takes on the Winnipeg Jets and the Vegas Golden Knights.
You can know more about the NHL, Dallas Stars (and maybe even the Detroit Red Wings) than your hockey-loving friends. We’re 3 kids from Texas, born and raised, and we talk all things hockey every week. We’ll take your ears to the rink and the offices where managers fight and players cut deals. This is Skate in the Crease, a Texas Take on Hockey.
