The news? There is no news. The guys discuss the slow-moving discussions around the pending Erik Karlsson trade, from cost to rosters and how Miro Heiskanen is most definitely better than Erik Karlsson and nothing can go wrong.
With all of the deals flooding in from free agency and Tavares jumping to Toronto, we give our opinions on all of the major moves. Daniel and Taylor debate the merits of controversial moves from the Dallas Stars after missing out on Tavares. We discuss Stastny spurning Winnepeg for the Vegas Golden Knights, the ridiculous contracts, the goalie carousel, and Dylan, of course, goes over the Red Wings minor moves. At the end, we fail to predict the future! Yeah the O’Reilly trade happened right when we finished recording.
The Red Wings and the Stars made some pretty interesting selections for the 2018 draft. The whole gang goes through the draft classes for both teams and offers their takes.
The 2018 NHL Draft has arrived! In this special extended episode, Daniel and Taylor discuss the strategies and potential targets for both the Stars and Red Wings ahead of Friday night’s festivities.
Washington won it all and we look back at the mess that was the 2017-18 season. The Capitals players, especially Alex Ovechkin, have been raucously enjoying their new hardware in ways that never cease to entertain. The season as a whole, though, took some very unexpected turns, from players suddenly reemerging to entire teams crumbling under the weight of offseason expectations. We discuss the chances of bizarre history repeating itself and pay homage to the unceremonious end to one of the NHL’s greatest careers.
Todd Nelson joins the Stars bench, further breaking Dylan’s heart, and the Capitals might have found the way to stop the Knights. In this week’s episode, we discuss how Nelson’s move from Grand Rapids to the Stars affects the team’s ability to succeed and what it shows about the state of the league as a whole. We also cover the eerily similar Texas-Toronto and Vegas-Washington finals, where the Stars are finding success on the back of incredible goaltending but Vegas is beginning to show signs of falling back to earth.
Vegas continues to thrive on our doubts, and the Texas Stars recent success begs the question if farm team success even matters. In this episode, we marvel at Fleury’s stealing of a series and the possibility that the Jets were worn out from their seven game slugfest with the Predators. We then transition to talk about the Texas Stars also having an amazing goaltender in Mike McKenna and their strong chance of winning the Calder Cup. Both the Texas Stars and the Red Wings’ Grand Rapids Griffins have won Calder Cups recently. We wonder why this hasn’t translated to success at the NHL level.
In this episode, we talk all things playoffs, draft lottery, and our hope to be at the NHL draft in Dallas this June! It’s just Taylor and Dylan this episode, but we somehow make it through 30 mins without getting too side-tracked. Ok, we may go into one short rant about Ciarelli…it’s so difficult not too! In addition, we talk about our playoff predictions, Marchand’s bizarre licking of people, and a brief preview of who the Red Wings and Stars might draft.
Everyone is back together!
For each playoff series, we talk about the key factors that we think will decide each match-up’s fate.
Lastly, Taylor talks about what the Stars’ roster may look like next year as the stars have a couple of exciting young additions and cap space to sign free agents like the much-sought-after John Tavares.
Daniel takes his controversial stand and gets shouted down by Taylor and Dylan. Who are the Dallas Stars? What does their future hold? Are they playoff bound? On this episode of Skate in the Crease, we argue about the future of the Dallas Stars (and bemoan the state of the Detroit Red Wings as well).
Big Hits Are Short-Term Fun But Damage the Game
We discuss the recent controversial hits by the Stars own Greg Pateryn and the player hated by everyone (except Bruins fans): Brad Marchand. With the NFL’s CTE controversy, we talk about wanting the NHL to take a more proactive goal in preventing player injury by discouraging these kind of big hits.
Video of the Hits:
Ron Francis is Out
We cover the recent firing of the Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis and the interesting take their new owner Tom Dundon (we, uh, called him Mike a few times) has on managing a hockey franchise. We’re hoping he kills their Darling (buy out that contract!)
The Big Rant: “The Stars won’t make the Playoffs”
Daniel feels very strongly that we’re not seeing a system or coaching failure. He believes we’re seeing players using creativity and novelty and then failing to deliver goals (y’know, the way you actually win the game). Backed up by an armful of stats, he argues his cause.
We’ll be back next week with more hot-takes, rants, and analysis.
