The Playoff Race Eulogies – Part 1

It’s eulogy nation on this week’s Skate in the Crease.

This week we discuss the lost hopes and dreams of many a fan as we eulogize the hockey teams eliminated from the playoff race. We say goodbye to the hapless Buffalo Sabres. We say goodbye to the aging Sedin Twins and the Vancouver Canucks. We say goodbye to the tragic fall of the Ottawa Senators and the cost-cutting Eugene Melnyk. We say goodbye to the once assumed playoff team of the Detroit Red Wings and cry. We say goodbye to the previously Subban and pre-injured Price led Montreal Canadiens. We say goodbye, quite happily, to the bandwagon that is the Chicago Blackhawks. We say goodbye to the Chiarelli insanity show that is the Edmonton Oilers. Despite all of the farewells, we offer up some hope for each of these teams.

We end the episode by going over the playoff race and giving our hot takes on the future success of Colorado and the fate of the Calgary Flames.

Why the Dallas Stars WON’T Make the Playoffs

Daniel takes his controversial stand and gets shouted down by Taylor and Dylan. Who are the Dallas Stars? What does their future hold? Are they playoff bound? On this episode of Skate in the Crease, we argue about the future of the Dallas Stars (and bemoan the state of the Detroit Red Wings as well).

Big Hits Are Short-Term Fun But Damage the Game

We discuss the recent controversial hits by the Stars own Greg Pateryn and the player hated by everyone (except Bruins fans): Brad Marchand. With the NFL’s CTE controversy, we talk about wanting the NHL to take a more proactive goal in preventing player injury by discouraging these kind of big hits.

Video of the Hits:

Shaw’s hit on Pateryn.

Marchand’s hit on Duclair.

Ron Francis is Out

We cover the recent firing of the Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis and the interesting take their new owner Tom Dundon (we, uh, called him Mike a few times) has on managing a hockey franchise. We’re hoping he kills their Darling (buy out that contract!)

The Big Rant: “The Stars won’t make the Playoffs”

Daniel feels very strongly that we’re not seeing a system or coaching failure. He believes we’re seeing players using creativity and novelty and then failing to deliver goals (y’know, the way you actually win the game). Backed up by an armful of stats, he argues his cause.

We’ll be back next week with more hot-takes, rants, and analysis.

Is Seattle Ready for the NHL?

The Seattle Expansion had an unbelievable ticket drive but fans will have high expectations after Vegas’ insane success. We’re not sure a second expansion can match the Vegas hype.

Our Playoff Hopes and Trade Outcome Analysis

We start this episode off by taking stock of the current playoff hopes of the teams around the NHL.

We look at the very early outcomes of the players moved at the trade deadline with some players thriving with their new hockey teams and others struggling to live up to the hopes of their new teams had when acquiring them.

What’s the NHL’s deal with International Hockey?

We’re still celebrating the USA Women’s Hockey Olympic Gold Medal Victory in a shootout thriller over Canada.

We go over the Olympic Athletes from Russia Men’s unsurprising gold medal amid the controversy of the NHL’s refusal to go to the Olympics and discuss the future of the NHL in the Olympics.

In Memoriam: Arizona Coyotes (10/5/17 – 3/6/18)

Then in our deep dive, we start off our eulogy series with the Arizona Coyotes, a team with big changes and a lot of hope coming into the hockey season only to be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

We end the show as always with Loose Ends and Hot Takes, where we have interesting conversations about soup throwing, yes you read that right, as well as takes on the Winnipeg Jets and the Vegas Golden Knights.

How We Broke Down the NHL Trade Deadline

Hockey is a love language. The grace, speed, and violence join together to create a symphony of crashing cymbals. And it’s music to our ears. Daniel, Taylor, and Dylan are Texan hockey fans. Get to know them and you might find yourself in love with the Dallas Stars (or the Detroit Red Wings!)

In this NHL Trade Deadline Spectacular, our inaugural episode, we break down the numerous and needlessly complicated trades that came in under the wire. We identify the winners and losers in each deal (a surprisingly fair trade cycle, Rick Nash disaster notwithstanding).

Lastly, we get into our weekly segment, Loose-Ends and Hot Takes, where we make our early predictions for which teams will make it to the pinnacle of hockey, Lord Stanley’s Cup itself.
